Grandfather Si” — Mr. Si Kawon

Founder of Nam Mong Liquor, is a local distiller whose handcrafted spirit has been a part of Nam Mong Village, Phato Subdistrict, Tha Wang Pha District, Nan Province for over 30 years. His legacy marks the beginning of what is now known as “Laonan.”

In the past, Grandfather Si operated a small community distillery, using traditional methods of distilling liquor passed down through generations. Today, that humble beginning has evolved into a more modern operation — using updated distillation technology to enhance quality and consistency, while still preserving the original flavor and soul of the spirit.

Now is the time for both Thais and international visitors to discover “Laonan”, a spirit that captures the story, the experience, and the soul of Grandfather Si — a legacy carefully distilled and lovingly passed on to the next generation through the bottle, through the taste, and through the story of Laonan.

Laonan — A Legend Worth Sharing for Generations

Our Products

Lao Nan Original

Laonan 40% ABV

Laonan Original is a 40% ABV distilled spirit made from locally grown sticky rice, sourced directly from farmers in Nan Province, Northern Thailand. The product reflects a commitment to adding value to local agriculture by transforming traditional ingredients into a meaningful, handcrafted spirit.

This version of Laonan is an evolution of the original local liquor known as “Nam Mong Liquor,” first created over 30 years ago by Grandfather Si — a respected village distiller. His legacy has been lovingly carried forward by the next generation, who have helped modernize the packaging and bring the story to life for today’s consumers.

The new design features an illustration of Grandfather Si distilling liquor in the traditional way, inspired by the famous mural art style of Wat Phumin, a cultural icon of Nan Province.

The name “Laonan” itself carries a double meaning in Thai:

  • It can mean “The Story of Nan”, and

  • With the word “Lao” also meaning liquor in Thai, it can also be understood as “Liquor from Nan.”
This clever play on words reflects both the heritage and the craft that define this unique community spirit.

Lao Hmong

Laonan’s “Lao Hmong” 40% ABV

Laonan – Lao Hmong (Corn Liquor) is a traditional corn-based spirit rooted in the heritage of the Hmong ethnic group, which has a significant population in Nan Province.

For the Hmong people, corn liquor is more than just a beverage — it is a symbol of purity and sacredness. It is often used in festive celebrations, to welcome honored guests, and plays an essential role in rituals and spiritual offerings, serving as a medium for communicating with the supernatural.
